Service dogs are always welcome on board and travel free in the cabin. From 22 April 2025, service dogs traveling to the US are also subject to new CDC rules (minimum age 6 months, microchip, CDC dog import form, not from high-risk rabies country within last 6 months). Service animals and small cats and dogs are welcome in SAS Lounges (except Norway) as long as they stay in their carriers.

Only dogs and cats are accepted in the hold. Up to 2 adult pets of the same species may share a carrier in the cabin. Up to 2 adult pets of similar size (max 14 kg each) can share a container in the hold, except on flights to the US.

What types of animals are permitted in the cabin?
Small dogs and cats older than 8 weeks are permitted in the cabin on SAS flights, provided they fit in an approved pet carrier under the seat in front. Service dogs are always welcome on board.
What is the maximum weight allowed for a pet in the cabin?
The maximum combined weight of the pet and carrier is 8 kg.
What are the carrier size requirements for in-cabin pet travel?
The carrier must be soft-sided, fully closeable, well-ventilated, and bite and leak-proof. Maximum size is 40 x 25 x 23 cm (L x W x H). The pet must be able to stand, turn, and lie down comfortably inside.
Can pets travel in the cargo hold, and what are the requirements?
Yes, only dogs and cats can travel in the hold. The container must be IATA-compliant and escape-proof. Maximum weight is 50 kg including the pet. Up to 2 adult pets of similar size (max 14 kg each) can share a container except on US flights. Some brachycephalic dogs (bulldogs, pugs, Pekingese and crossbreeds) may not travel in the hold. Book by contacting SAS Customer Service. A Certificate for Transportation of Animals (DOC) is required in duplicate except for domestic Scandinavian flights.
What are the fees for traveling with a pet?
Fees are charged per pet container, per one-way flight and vary by route. Cabin fees (USD): Domestic $60, Scandinavia/Europe/Middle East $80, Asia/Canada/US $105, China $159. Hold fees (USD): Domestic $100, Scandinavia/Europe/Middle East $195, Asia/Canada/US $370, China $775. Service dogs travel free.
Is there a limit on the number of pets per passenger or per flight?
Only 1 pet carrier is allowed per traveler in the cabin, with up to 2 healthy pets of the same species inside. The number of pets allowed per flight is limited and subject to availability.
Are there any breed restrictions for pets traveling in the cabin or cargo?
Certain snub-nosed (brachycephalic) dogs such as bulldogs, pugs, Pekingese and their crossbreeds may not travel in the hold for health reasons. Other snub-nosed dogs and cats may travel in the hold provided the container meets ventilation and space requirements.
What documents and health certificates are required to travel with a pet?
Pets under 14 weeks require a veterinarian's certificate. For hold travel (except domestic flights in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden), a Certificate for Transportation of Animals (DOC) is required in duplicate. Country-specific entry documents must also be obtained. For travel to the US from 22 April 2025, a completed CDC dog import form is required for dogs.
How do I book a flight for my pet, and can I do it online?
For cabin travel, submit a request when you book or up to 24 hours before departure via My Trips online. If booking is not possible within 24 hours of purchasing the ticket, contact SAS Customer Service. For hold travel, contact SAS Customer Service when you book or up to 24 hours before departure.
Are there special requirements for international travel with a pet?
Yes. Travel to the US (from 22 April 2025): dogs must be at least 6 months old, have a microchip, and a completed CDC dog import form; dogs from high-risk rabies countries within the last 6 months are not permitted. Travel to Greenland requires special permission from the Greenlandic Representation. Travel to Svalbard requires permission from the Norwegian Animal Health Authority; cats are not allowed in Svalbard. Travel to Iceland requires an import licence from the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority. Travel to China, UK, or UAE requires shipping as cargo via a freight forwarder.
