What types of animals are permitted in the cabin?
Small cats and dogs are permitted in the cabin on flights within Schengen and/or EU (Iceland excluded), and on flights to/from Svalbard (dogs only). Only dogs are permitted to/from Madeira.
What is the maximum weight allowed for a pet in the cabin?
The container and pet(s) together must not exceed 8 kg in total gross weight.
What are the carrier size requirements for in-cabin pet travel?
The container must not be bigger than 43 x 31 x 20 cm, or if soft, should compress down to fit these dimensions. Only bags and containers specifically designed for the transport of pets are accepted. Norwegian recommends a 'Sherpa Bag' made of flexible materials.
Can pets travel in the cargo hold, and what are the requirements?
Yes, cats and dogs can travel in the cargo hold on flights within Schengen and/or EU (Ireland and Iceland excluded) and on flights to/from Svalbard (dogs only). The container must be no bigger than 125 x 81 x 86 cm, solid, fully leakproof, escape-proof, adequately ventilated on all four sides, and clearly marked with owner contact details. The pet must be able to stand up, turn around, and lie in a natural position. A water container must be securely fastened and accessible from outside.
What are the fees for traveling with a pet?
For cabin travel: 55–75 EUR (online) or 60–85 EUR (at airport), per animal, each way. For cargo hold travel: 150–180 EUR (online) or 170–200 EUR (at airport), per animal, each way.
Is there a limit on the number of pets per passenger or per flight?
A maximum of 2 pets are accepted in the cabin per flight. Up to 2 cats or 2 dogs (not a mix) can share one crate in the cargo hold if well acquainted and of similar size. Up to 3 very small puppies or kittens in the same container may be booked as one animal in the cabin.
Are there any breed restrictions for pets traveling in the cabin or cargo?
There are no outright breed bans listed, but brachycephalic (snub-nosed) breeds of dogs and cats carry an increased risk of breathing problems and overheating. Owners of such breeds must sign a release form at check-in acknowledging the risks. Norwegian recommends consulting a vet if you are unsure whether your pet is brachycephalic.
What documents and health certificates are required to travel with a pet?
Vaccination documents are required. On international flights, the health/vaccination certificate must be in English. Dogs travelling to/from Svalbard require a permit from the Norwegian Food Safety Authority. Owners of brachycephalic breeds must sign a release form at check-in.
How do I book a flight for my pet, and can I do it online?
Yes, you can book your pet online when booking your flight, or add a pet to an existing booking online using your booking reference and surname. You can also book by calling Norwegian's Contact Centre. Spaces are limited, so early booking is recommended.
Are there special requirements for international travel with a pet?
Yes. On international flights, the health/vaccination certificate must be in English. For travel within the EU, Regulation (EU) No 576/2013 applies. Dogs travelling to/from Svalbard require a permit from the Norwegian Food Safety Authority. Passengers should check with local authorities for specific destination requirements.
Are there temperature-related restrictions for pets traveling in the cargo hold?
Cargo hold temperatures fluctuate based on external conditions and flight stages. While cabin air is circulated into the hold, temperatures can drop to as low as 0°C or rise while the aircraft is on the tarmac.
