- What types of animals are permitted in the cabin?
- Pets (including cats and dogs) are NOT permitted in the passenger cabin on ANA flights. Only assistance dogs (guide dogs, hearing dogs, mobility assistance dogs) and eligible service dogs (Psychiatric Service Dogs, Alert Dogs on US/Canada/Mexico routes; Emotional Support Dogs on Mexico routes only) are permitted in the cabin. All other pets travel in the cargo hold.
- What is the maximum weight allowed for a pet in the cabin?
- Pets are not allowed in the cabin. In cargo, the total weight of the pet and cage combined must not exceed 45 kg (99 lbs).
- What are the carrier size requirements for in-cabin pet travel?
- Pets are not permitted in the cabin. For cargo transport, the sum of the three sides (length + width + height) of the pet cage must not exceed 292 cm (115 inches). The cage must comply with IATA regulations and must be large enough for the pet to stand, sit, sleep, and turn around freely.
- Can pets travel in the cargo hold, and what are the requirements?
- Yes. Pets travel in the cargo hold (bulk cargo room) as checked baggage on ANA-operated flights, on the same flight as their owner. Advance phone reservation is required. The cage must comply with IATA regulations. A Letter of Consent must be signed at check-in. All country-specific import/export documents must be prepared in advance. The total weight of pet + cage must not exceed 45 kg, and the sum of cage dimensions must not exceed 292 cm. Only one animal per cage is accepted (in principle). A nozzle-type water supply device must be installed on the cage.
- What are the fees for traveling with a pet?
- Fees are charged per cage and vary by route. Cross-area international sectors (e.g., US to Japan): JPY 40,000 / USD 400 / CAD 400 / EUR 300. Within-area international sectors (e.g., Haneda to Bangkok): JPY 25,000 / USD 250 / CAD 250 / EUR 200. Japan domestic sectors: JPY 5,000 (rising to JPY 6,000, or JPY 4,000 for select routes, from May 19, 2026). Consumption tax may apply on domestic routes. Pet fees are not included in the free baggage allowance and are paid at check-in in the currency of the departure country/region.
- Is there a limit on the number of pets per passenger or per flight?
- Only one animal is accepted per cage (with the exception of up to 2 birds per cage). The number of pet cages accepted per flight is limited due to loading area space; availability should be confirmed at the time of booking.
- Are there any breed restrictions for pets traveling in the cabin or cargo?
- Yes. Short-nosed (brachycephalic) dog breeds are not accepted from May 1 to October 31 each year. Restricted breeds include: Bulldog, French Bulldog, Boxer, Shih Tzu, Boston Terrier, Bull Terrier, King Charles Spaniel, Tibetan Spaniel, Brussels Griffin, Chow Chow, Pug, Chin, and Pekingese.
- What documents and health certificates are required to travel with a pet?
- Required documents include: a signed Letter of Consent (downloaded from ANA's website, completed, and presented at check-in); a health certificate (required for connections at Japanese airports and by many destination countries); export quarantine certificate and import certificate as required by departure and destination countries. For importing dogs or cats into Japan, advance notification to the animal quarantine station at least 40 days before arrival is required, and the 'Approval of Import Inspection of Animals' document must be presented at check-in. Dogs must have a rabies vaccination within the past one year. Passengers should check all requirements with the relevant quarantine offices and embassies in advance.
- How do I book a flight for my pet, and can I do it online?
- Reservations for pet transport must be made by phone in advance. Online reservations are not accepted. Only customers who have booked ANA-operated flights with ANA flight numbers are eligible. When connecting from a domestic flight in Japan, reservations can be made up to two days before the departure date of the first sector. Contact the ANA Customer Service Center or the ANA International Reservation and Information Center for your region.
- Are there special requirements for international travel with a pet?
- Yes. Each country/region has its own regulations governing the import/export of live animals. Customers must contact the quarantine office and embassy of both the departure and destination countries to determine required documentation (export quarantine certificate, health certificate, import certificate, etc.) and prepare these in advance. For importing dogs or cats into Japan, advance notification to the animal quarantine station is required at least 40 days before arrival. Customers traveling to the UK, Hong Kong, or Australia cannot check in pets at the airport and must use a cargo agent. Pets may not enter or depart from Perth Airport. CDC revised entry requirements for dogs arriving in the US on or after August 1, 2024 apply. Rules for some countries may only allow pets to be transported as cargo.
- Are there temperature-related restrictions for pets traveling in the cargo hold?
- Yes. Short-nosed (brachycephalic) dog breeds are not accepted from May 1 to October 31 each year due to risk of heat stroke and breathing difficulties. During this same period (May 1–October 31), placing a small cage inside a larger cage or covering cages is prohibited due to poor ventilation risk. Passengers are required to provide cooling goods such as cooling pads and ice packs in summer, and blankets and body warmers in winter. A nozzle-type water supply device must be installed on the cage.
- What is the airline's policy on sedating pets during travel?
